The Society of Chemical Industry America (SCI America), on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, awarded the 2025 SCI America Chemical Industry Medal to Albert and James Chao during a celebratory event at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. Founded in 1894, SCI America provides a unique networking forum for chemical industry leaders, industrial scientists, and technologists to exchange new business ideas and best practices. The organization works to inspire students to enter technical careers by offering its members an opportunity to participate in an annual scholars’ program. The following is taken from the news release issued by SCI America on March 6, 2025.
The SCI America Chemical Industry Medal honors individuals whose leadership, commitment and contributions have been responsible for initiating substantial progress and driving high performance in the chemical industry. In addition to being a guiding force in the leadership of their organization, recipients are recognized for their service to the industry as a whole.
James and Albert Chao, along with their father, T.T. Chao, started Westlake Corporation in 1986 by
acquiring, refurbishing and rehiring employees at a shuttered polyethylene plant in Sulphur, Louisiana. They expanded that operation by building an
ethane cracker to supply ethylene for polyethylene production. Soon thereafter, they acquired a large ethylene-to-chlor-alkali-to polyvinyl chloride integrated facility in Western Kentucky to expand their operations. Today, Westlake has one of the world’s most highly integrated chemicals-to-downstream products operations in our industry.
"The contributions of the Chao brothers to our industry over the last 40 years is remarkable and highly deserving of the Chemical Industry Medal," said Roger Kearns, chair of SCI America.
“We are humbled by this presentation of The Chemical Industry Medal,” commented Albert and James Chao. “We owe this recognition to the hard work and dedication of everyone who has worked with us over the years, including our board of directors, customers, employees, family and suppliers to whom we extend our gratitude and appreciation.”
