Westlake Polymers Earns OSHA Star Recertification

Sulphur, Louisiana – November 14, 2003 – Westlake Polymers LP, one of the Westlake Group of Companies, has been recertified as a Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star site by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in recognition of its employees' strong commitment and outstanding record of safety and health in the workplace. Westlake Polymers is one of only three OSHA Star sites in southwest Louisiana, and one of 41 sites in this state. Westlake Petrochemicals LP, also of the Westlake Group, is a VPP Star site in Southwest Louisiana.

OSHA approves companies as VPP Star sites after they have demonstrated excellence in areas of total management commitment, safety communication, training and employee participation and the location's safety and health records. These elements are part of the Voluntary Protection Program, which evaluates a company on the 33 requirements for a Star site designation. VPP star sites apply for recertification every three years and each recertification audit becomes more stringent.

“We are extremely proud to have earned this recertification. It is a significant accomplishment, and all the credit goes to our employees who have made a genuine effort and commitment to put the Westlake Group on the map as one of the safest places to work in the United States,” said Albert Chao, President of the Westlake Group.

Currently, there are 642 plant sites in the nation that are OSHA Star sites, out of a potential of 1.6 million sites. “The Star program has recognized our company as an exemplary worksite that has implemented comprehensive programs that are self-sufficient in their ability to control worksite hazards, resulting in injury/illness rates that are below the industry's national average. It is a significant accomplishment for our employees and our community to be a part of such a select group,” said Jerry Farmer, Westlake Group's Vice President of Manufacturing for the Lake Charles Complex.

The Westlake Group is a manufacturer and supplier of petrochemicals, polymers, and fabricated plastic products with headquarters in Houston, TX. The company employs more than 400 people at its facilities in the Lake Charles area, which manufactures a full range of resins found in plastic products that are used every day ranging from bread bags, and toys, to medical containers.
